American Culture Class: Superheroes

In American culture class we discussed the American idea of superheroes. There are many famous super heroes in American such as, Batman, Spiderman, and Iron man. We read an excerpt form the book ‘superheroes and philosophy’ by Jeph Loeb and Tom Morris. Many people believe that stories of superheroes embody our deepest hopes and fears. People also feel that superheroes help us deal with our worst nightmares. Every superhero has superpower, such as the ability to fly, to leap over tall buildings or to develop human abilities to superhuman level. According to the Greek philosopher, Plato, he believed that good is inherently attractive and that is why superhero stories have been popular for so long. For instance, superheroes can remind us of the significance of self-discipline, self-sacrifice, and using our lives for something good and noble. Moreover, when we confront adversity in our lives, we are inclined to give up easily, but superheroes show us how to face the difficulty. For example, Batman teaches us keep going even when the going is very tough. I really like stories of superheroes that inspire me a lot.
